This Week in Music NFTs - August 1

It’s not about Drake.

It’s about the next Drake.

Music NFTs will have their moment. But it probably won’t be in the way that you think.

Your favorite artist (today) probably won’t start minting Music NFTs anytime soon.

There’s no strong case to do so (yet) and everyday fans of most major artists have not had a great relationship with NFTs more broadly.

Instead, it’s going to be about the next generation of artists using web3 as a backbone.

Think about it. If you’re an artist starting a career today - web3 is the cutting edge.

It’s the place to try something new and cut through the noise.

This is where opportunity lies. The sector is still looking for its breakout act, and it probably will for the next year.

But keep in mind - a “breakout artist” is going to look much different than what we’ve come to expect.

They probably won’t have a top charting hit on Spotify or TikTok.

They probably won’t be selling out arenas.

Instead, you’re going to see a Discord with ~1000 highly engaged collectors saying Gm every morning.

You’ll see artists building products around themselves and their collections.

You’ll see stories of new investment structures and ways to share in the collective upside of an artist’s growth.

And all of this is happening right before our eyes.

It was a slow week in Music NFTs all things considered, but remember this.

There has never been a better time to discover emerging talent in web3.

These are the pioneers. The early adopters. Those taking risks and willing to wear it on their chest.

Zoom out 5-10 years and minting will be easy. Collecting will be baked into everyday streaming. The process will be standardized. And at that point - that’s when you want to know your lane.

So here’s to the next generation of artists.

We’re all watching. Waiting. One mint at a time.

PS: If you’re in LA - I’m moderating a panel in Santa Monica on Tuesday. Come through!
